21.

To the false knight Sir Eustace Folville, lord of Ashby Folville and Teigh, greetings.

Know that I have taken Dame Alice Folville a prisoner, and shall hang her from the lone oak tree on the summit of the Crow’s Rest, at noon on Friday, if you have not appeared before me by that time.

Also know that you are required to give up your body, and the bodies of your brothers Laurence, Richard, Robert, Thomas and Walter, to the king’s justice, which I have been empowered to execute. Since you are condemned out of your own mouth, by freely admitting to the unlawful abduction of Richard Willoughby, justice of the bench – notwithstanding your sundry other crimes – there shall be no trial.

I shall have the pleasure, the great and long-delayed pleasure, of removing your head with my sword, while your brothers shall be hanged.
